We have been bathed in glorious sunshine during the summer and it has been perfect weather for golf. The grass is growing at a very fast rate every day we are out keeping on top of the cutting.
Over the past month I have received some really positive comments about the condition of the golf course, I would like to thank all the members who have passed on such comments. The fairways have all been beautifully striped this week. Overall the fairways have been in the best condition since I took over the head greenkeeper role.
It is during the start of August that every green keeper up and down the country starts to prepare for the autumn greens renovations. This work is absolutely essential to ensure the greens remain playable during the coming winter. In August we solid tine the greens which are more susceptible to holding water (holes 2, 9, 16 and 18) with a 9 inch spike and then with a 4 inch spike. Every other green has been spiked using 4 inch tines. After we have done this we apply 40 tonnes of sand to all 18 greens and then we brush in. The sand fills in the holes and any bumps on the green surface. Thank you to all golfers’ for their patience and understanding while we did the work.
I am glad to say that now the greens are back to their usual Hill Barn high quality standard. The weather was perfect for our renovations and the greens were fully recovered after only two weeks.
Any golfers who have played the 12th hole recently, will have noticed the frame by the 12th tee. At a cost of £1400 we are installing a new Huxley all weather mat to use during the wet winter months. This mat is quite a bit larger than the old winter mat, in fact it is 12 feet by 12 feet so you should have plenty of room to play.
Please may I kindly remind all golfers to remember to repair their pitch marks on the greens. Simply by repairing your pitch mark the playing surface will be much more consistent all year round. A pitch mark which is repaired will heal within 24 hours, left unrepaired will take three weeks to repair leaving the green surface bobbly.
I look forward to hopefully seeing many of you out on the course this Autumn, I hope you enjoy your golf and the leaves do not all drop at once.
