Hill Barn Golf Club
May- 3 off the tee
What a difference a day makes – 24 little hours or so the song goes. It was deep winter on Monday and now it feels like spring and it will be summer at the weekend. The course, like many others in our area, has taken a battering this winter. Snow, wind, rain, hail – the beast from the East – we had it all! We will be putting in a swale across the second fairway this summer to help the drainage of the 2nd green next winter. The new winter tee on the 6th will also be available next year. We hope both of these will improve the course for next winter.
A warm welcome to all our new members, including the many that joined on membership open day. I hope you find the Club friendly and welcoming and if you have any questions please do not hesitate to speak to any of my staff. They are especially good at finding you new playing partners or sorting your new handicap.
We have completed the year long trial of the coloured flag system for the greens and have declared it a success. This will now be a permeant feature of the course and has been adopted by Chichester Golf Club. Hopefully it will continue to improve your scores and help with pace of play!
You may have noticed that we have been cutting down trees; there are a few more to go, and tidying up the overflow car park. This is in anticipation of building a new green keeping shed and compound in this area. This work should commence in August after all the pre planning conditions have been satisfied.
In the Clubhouse we are still planning on replacing the soffits and guttering – but the curves of the historic building have proved a challenge. This work should however be completed by the summer. We will also be replacing the carpet in the lobby and part of the shop.
You heard it here first – I am predicting a BBQ summer so enjoy your golf.
Pro Shop Report
What a superb Masters tournament, what great golf was played over the four days. Sadly not the winner I think most people were hoping for. Once again the level of golf gave us something to aspire to. The question still remains, will Rory ever win a green jacket?
The golfing season is now under way and we have finally seen some sunshine. We have added a new brand to our shop which is Benross. You may have heard of them as we did stock them in the past but they have come back stronger than ever with premium quantity shaft and grips used in all their products. All clubs are available to be fully custom fitted, so make sure you get the correct clubs for you.
7 Iron Set Steel £349.99
Be sure to pop in for a demo of this great product – don’t forget we won’t be beaten on price.
We are also offering a selection of Benross Ladies equipment for sale as well as specially designed seniors and men’s equipment. Also now in stock summer shirts and shorts from as little as £24.99 including brands such as Under Armour, Adidas and Greg Norman.
Back by popular demand we are once again this summer offering two Greg Norman shirts for £40. We have a range of sizes and popular colours in stock.
Trolley Trade In
Is it time to change your Trolley? If you have an old electric trolley, you can now trade it in and receive £50 paid into your bank account. To take advantage please contact me in the shop and I will talk you through the various new trolley options.
Pictured above is the Motocaddy S1 which is available in White or Black.
The Motocaddy range of trollies with Lithium batteries start from £449.99, so if you trade in your trolley there are huge savings to be had. Please be quick as this offer ends on 30th June 2018.
And finally a big warm welcome to all the new members that joined so far this year and on membership open day. If you have any questions regarding you membership, such as when the roll ups are or how do I book online my team is here to help and will be happy to answer any questions so you can enjoy your golfing this season and beyond.
Rule of the Month
“Ready Golf” is a phrase you are going to hear more and more about over the next few months. “Ready golf” is a new initiative from the R and A, it is simply designed to speed up the game, increase enjoyment and get more people playing golf. “Ready golf” is something all sections at Hill Barn are keen to implement.
The term “ready golf” has been adopted by many as a catch-all phrase for a number of actions that separately and collectively can improve pace of play. There is no official definition of the term, but examples of “ready golf” in action are:
- Hitting a shot when safe to do so if a player farther back faces a challenging shot and is taking time to assess their options
- Shorter hitters playing first from the tee or fairway if longer hitters have to wait
- Hitting a tee shot if the person with the honour is delayed in being ready to play
- Hitting a shot before helping someone to look for a lost ball
- Putting out even if it means standing close to someone else’s line
- Hitting a shot if a person who has just played from a greenside bunker is still farthest from the hole but is delayed due to raking the bunker
- When a player’s ball has gone over the back of a green, any player closer to the hole but chipping from the front of the green should play while the other player is having to walk to their ball and assess their shot
- Marking scores upon immediate arrival at the next tee, except that the first player to tee off marks their card immediately after teeing off
For more details on Ready golf please view the video below and visit the R and A website. There will also be posters displayed around the club with more details and information.
The grass has started to grow and the course is looking stunning, and after a very slow start to the year we are now in full cutting mode on all areas of the course. The semi rough seems to be growing about half an inch a day.
Currently we are cutting the greens at 5mm, the greens are running at 7.2 on the stimp meter. By the end of May we will be cutting a 3mm for the duration of the summer. The video below will explain how and why we use the Stimpmeter.
On the 14th May we plan to carry out our spring renovations on the greens. We will be spiking all the putting greens. On holes 2, 9, 16 and 18 we will spike the greens twice instead of once. Two tonne of sand will be applied to each green and then gently brushed in. This work is essential to provide a smooth fast and dry putting surface all year round. Please bear with us on Monday the 14th and Tuesday the 15th May, we hope to complete the work by the Tuesday afternoon.
18th Green After 9 inch solid tyne.
Some fairways have been fertilised this week, as you read this I am out on the fairways spraying for weeds. I hope you notice the improvement over the coming weeks on our fairways.
All tee boxes have been fertilised, top dressed and over seeded. The growth of grass is very pleasing and we have had some rain to help this process this week. All tee boxes are divoted weekly to help improve the grass sword.
We have started edging all 100 bunkers at Hill Barn. Sadly we are slightly behind due to the wet weather but we plan to catch up soon. All the bunkers will be topped up with sand.
We have all seen Steven Wilford in the shop or drinking tea, but how much do we really know about him. This month we tracked Steve down and asked him a few questions.
