Hill Barn Golf Club
December – 3 off the tee
Well another year at Hill barn has flown by. Richard and I have now been the proud owners of Hill Barn Golf Club for 16 years and we are pleased with the way the Club and course has developed. Many of you have been members for all or a large party of our period of ownership and I appreciate the loyalty and dedication you have shown to Hill Barn. Most of all I appreciate the hard work of the committees and especially the Captains of each section every year. I salute you all.
Once again, we have made improvements to the course this Autumn to try and ensure that “dry” Hill barn continues to live up to its name and we have no winter greens and few winter tees. We will monitor the effectiveness of the sway on the second and the new winter mat on the 3rd and as with last year if we identify other areas this winter that need improvement then we will make these next year.
The new Green keeping barn is nearly complete and should open at the end of January. This will coincide with the delivery of 10 new Yamaha buggies. We will be able to open part of the overflow car park in front of the barn once the work has finished. The final step of the project will be the installation of a beech hedge to hide it all!
Next year sees some exciting changes for members to get used to including the amendments to the rules of golf which come into effect on 1 January and the new slope ratings. I hope that the new rules will encourage the adoption of ready golf and help the game to move faster, which is something we can all vote for!
Happy Xmas and a merry new year to you all.

As you may be aware, the new Rules of Golf come into effect from 1st January 2019, as unveiled by the R&A and USGA earlier this year. Many of the changes introduced are in relation to ball-dropping procedures, measurements in taking relief and also penalty strokes.
The main theme to come out of these changes is to make the game more accessible and enjoyable, by reducing the amount of penalties for the more minor misdemeanours, but also to reduce the time allowed for lost ball searches and also shot time.
If you wish to read up on these changes for more information, the link below will give you all the facts.
I would like to thank Chris & Stuart in the shop for all of their hard work and the help they provided me so far; I would also like to wish all the members at Hill Barn a Merry Christmas.

Rule of the Month
We all have that one friend or have experienced someone saying “One” when the ball falls off the tee.
If a ball, when not in play, falls off a tee or is knocked off a tee by the player in addressing it, it may be re-teed, without penalty. However, if a stroke is made at the ball in these circumstances, whether the ball is moving or not, the stroke counts, but there is no penalty.
Over the last few weeks we have been installing a new winter tee on the 3rd hole just in front of the white tees. The winter tee consists of a Huxley mat like the 1st or 12 th tees. As with all winter tees this will only be used as and when needed.
I am happy to report that the new sway in front of the 2nd green has been a success to date. It is helping keep the putting surface much drier.
You will have noticed that there are white lines in front of the aprons, we have done this to prevent trollies and buggies going too close the greens, we have also roped off some of the softer areas on the golf course which will help manage the traffic flow and spread the wear and tear during the winter.
By the end of this week the ground work for the new barn will have been completed, they have also now started to build the mess room inside the barn and will be completing the wiring; we are hoping to be in by the end of January.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank my green keeping staff, Rob, Mike and James for all the hard work and dedication this year….
